PPTC is generally composed of Polyethylene and a conductor (the main component is Carbon Black). Due to its self-healing physical characteristics, PPTC is widely used in overcurrent protection in consumer electronics, computers, lighting, and instrument industries.

At normal operating temperatures, polyethylene encapsulates the conductor tightly in a crystalline structure, forming a low-impedance conductive path as shown on the left. Because the impedance is low, the thermal energy generated by the current flowing through the PPTC component on the line is small and will not change the crystal structure of polyethylene.
