PPTC overcurrent and overheat protection

The recoverable fuse element is connected in series in the circuit. Under normal circumstances, it is in a low-resistance state to ensure the normal operation of the circuit. When the circuit is short-circuited or an abnormally large current flows in, the self-heating of the component increases its impedance, limiting the current to sufficient It is small and plays the role of overcurrent protection. At the same time, when the external ambient temperature rises sharply, after the environment reaches the product switch temperature, it can play an over-temperature protection role.

 

Automatic recovery

When the overcurrent and overheating fault is eliminated, the recoverable fuse element automatically returns to a low resistance state. This avoids both maintenance and replacement, as well as open and closed states that can cause continuous circuit damage. The reason why the resettable fuse has the dual functions of overcurrent and overheat protection and automatic recovery is due to its special manufacturing. Recoverable fuses are made of a mixture of polymers and conductive materials. The polymer recoverable fuse is composed of a polymer resin matrix and conductive particles distributed therein. Under normal circumstances, the conductive particles form a chain-like conductive path in the resin matrix, and the polymer recoverable fuse exhibits low impedance (a). When an overcurrent occurs in the circuit, the heat generated by the large current flowing through the polymer recoverable fuse causes the polymer resin matrix to expand and cut off the chain-like conductive path formed by the conductive particles, causing the impedance of the polymer recoverable fuse to rise rapidly. High, thus protecting the circuit from overcurrent (b). After the fault is removed, the resin cools and crystallizes again, the volume shrinks, the conductive particles re-form the conductive path, and the polymer can restore the fuse to return to low impedance. Compared with traditional fuses, it has the advantages of being resettable, small in size and more solid.

Recovery time characteristics

Within a few seconds after the overcurrent condition of the JKPPTC element disappeared, the temperature of the JKPPTC element quickly dropped, and the JKPPTC element quickly returned to its low-resistance state.

External influence

1) When the ambient temperature is increased above 25 ° C, the current through the recoverable fuse will decrease rapidly.

2) 100% of the current on the line passes the recoverable fuse at an ambient temperature of 25 ° C. However, if more than twice the rated current is generated, the recoverable fuse will operate.

3) The higher the ambient temperature, the greater the current passed. The shorter the action time will be.
